Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), also known as Thin Film Deposition, is a vacuum coating process that vaporizes solid metal into a plasma of atoms or molecules. This vapor can be deposited as a high-performance coating on a wide variety of substrates.

What is PVD Coating?

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating refers to the application of extremely thin films (with a thickness of 0.5–5 μm) using modern vapor deposition technology under vacuum conditions. Thin films produced in this environment typically offer significant improvements in various performance aspects:

Enhanced Surface Hardness: Surface hardness is elevated to levels beyond that of even the hardest steels, making most PVD coatings highly scratch-resistant and exceptionally durable.

Improved Chemical Stability: The coatings exhibit greater resistance to corrosion in various environments, including humidity, acidic conditions, and oxidation.

How does PVD coating work?

PVD coating is a modern, environmentally friendly thin-layer production process based on vacuum technology. The main players in this process are clean solid metals, like titanium, zirconium, chromium, and other metallic elements. These metals are evaporated in one of two ways: either by “sputtering” or “arc discharge.” The metal ions are then directed towards a product surrounded by a plasma of reactive gas, usually nitrogen. The chemical reaction between the metal ions and the reactive gas leads to the stable formation of a thin coating with a nanostructure. This coating has excellent mechanical, chemical, and optical properties.

One big advantage of PVD technology is that it can be done at very low temperatures, below 250°C. This is super important for steel materials because the PVD process temperature is way lower than the usual heat treatment temperature. Plus, the core microstructure and mechanical properties of the base material stay the same!
